Writing Brain

How do you get into your writing brain? For me, it’s sleeping in, enjoying breakfast and a cup of coffee, and then wasting hours trying to write a blog by perusing social media.

Seriously. I’ve been trying to write this since 9:30 a.m. It’s now almost 11.

I need to write at least 5k on the new story this weekend, and I only have one day (today) to do it. I need to get into my writing brain RIGHT NOW to make that happen.

I’m going to complete three activities to help (I hope):

  1. Write my morning pages, even if it’s not morning (from Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way).

  2. I’m going to read through my outline for the story, to understand where I’m going.

  1. I’m going to read through my writing partner’s notes for the third time. I’ve heard the advice, “Don’t edit until the first draft is done.” Editing what I already have, fleshing it out, and making it more real helps me continue to the next chapter.

What routines do you follow to find your writing brain?
